All Hallow's Eve EVE UPDATE!

Halloween is tomorrow, The one night of the year where we can all crawl from our graves to dance and party and dress like something strange! The one night of the year children can escape into fantasy, and a mishmash of traditions from all times and all over the world...try and be scary, get free junkfood and cause mischief. Though one has to wonder how many people won't let their kids go out door to door for fear of catching the SWINE FLU! Halloween won't be as great as it was when we were young (I feel like the holiday crested, and now the world is too paranoid and fearful to really experience it the same way), it is still a little sad many children just won't get to experience it. If that last message made you sad, feel free to send me candy! MOVING ON!

Contest? What Contest? Oh that contest where you could have won something awesome, freeee, and all you had to do was take a picture. tsk tsk tsk. I am disappointed, so I watched the movie I was giving away and it was excellent. I thought about giving it away to whoever posted the best Halloween costume, as an extension, but I've lost all faith in humanity now....just kidding, though there will be no extension and the prize will sit in my video collection instead! Perhaps another chance to win something will show up, but for the love of all things HORROR you have to show some interest or that idea will vanish like Hope in a Stephen King novel.

Paranormal Activity...Watched it last night to a packed theater on a Thursday night. It starts slow, which is important as it builds up as we go along, and it also allows the viewers to lower their guard and really let what's happening sink in. The suspense when you know something is going to happen, that feeling in the pit of your stomach, pretty strong at some points. It wasn't too bad, kinda spooky, kinda suspenseful, kinda scary, but I definitely did not lose any sleep over it! So don't worry, you won't really shat your pants...well some people did, but I'm sure you won't...maybe. Saw 6 came in second place to This flick on their opening weekend. It cost $11K to $15K to make this and they pulled in $22 Million just on the weekend. Wow.

Alot of excellent vids out on DVD right now. Trick r Treat, DEAD SNOW the nazi zombie movie is out already. Get down to Burning Moon Video for their Halloween sale! 20% off all items, lots of fantastical genre flicks to choose from. Also the next Night Terrors @ The Plaza Theatre they are showing is a special 35mm screening of John Carpenter's 1980's cult classic THE THING. Nov. 5th! So if you plan on renting something good this Saturday and staying in, maybe go there? You will find what you need.

Screamfest, Nightmare Now, The Haunted Museum are all open through the weekend! Need a few scares and don't mind the massive line ups then check it out! Calgary Ghost Tours are kicking in the rest of it's season. Nov. 14 is the last day until next June. They do private tours for large groups, or you can join in on any number of tours. Find out local Calgary history and ghost stories in 5 different walking tours! Maybe if enough of you are interested we can set up a tour group before the 14th?

So I hope you all have an exciting, spooky, eerie, and most excellent Halloween. Watch out behind you when walking in the dark, and if you hear something scratching or crawling or slobbering nearby, don't worry...it's probably just the wind. Right?

Screamfest! ZOMBIE PORTRAITS?! Paranormal Activity and moooore

Aaaaaaw damn! All Hallows Eve creeps closer and closer leaving people scrambling to find costumes, candy, and plans! Lots of fun stuff coming up the next couple of weeks, if you plan on bundling up at home and handing out candy make sure you scare at LEAST 10 kids. If you plan on going to a party make sure you scare at LEAST 10 friends, and if you plan on going to some scary places alone well....then you're stupid.

Don't Forget@!!! Halloween Horror Picture Contest is slowly running out of time! Make a great or decent or whatever picture with you in it, post it on the Facebook groups picture section, and if it's scary enough you just may win a DVD of Trick R' Treat! OR any Horror DVD of your choosing. Time is fleeting!

SCREAMFEST!
I attended it last night and It was great!! There were fire performers on a stage surrounded by pumpkins, decent skills. Lots of performers in costume running around the grounds scaring people. For $15 on weekdays and $20 on weekends you get Unlimited entry into the Fest"Evil" Tent which houses a couple charity haunted houses, tons of demonic carnie games, Zombie protraits by Tank Standing Buffalo (Which of course I had to get done, and was not disappointed! ) a Side Show, and a few other scares! ALSO make sure you buy some KILLER CASH where you get your tickets, it is redeemed for the games and almost everything at the FestEvil tent, and its cheaper to buy the KILLER CASH then pay for the games with real cash. Then outside you get your choice of 5 Different Haunted Houses, you get entry into each one ONCE but then you get entry into one more as a bonus "your favorite" one. We went when the weather was a tropical 4-8C and the lines were just monstrous! About 1 hour to get into our first house, since the place closes at midnight you better get there at 7 when they open, dress warmly, and if you have to, choose carefully as you may not be able to go in all of them. We didn't get a chance to check out most of the houses, but they all look great. You will definitely enjoy them and have a great time, no doubt about it!

The Masses Demanded It, And They Heard! Paranormal Activity, The new movie to hit theaters had a long journey to our screens! Originally it was playing for small theaters in the States. They put up a website where different cities could vote to have the movie play in their city. If enough people "Demanded" it, they would bring it their way. However the response was overwhelming, with well over 1,000,000 people demanding it play Everywhere. So a nationwide release was rolled out. Lucky us we have it at 2 theaters i think? or maybe all of them, i havent really checked. None the less, it definitely looks spooky, and i suggest you all try and make it to a showing before Halloween! On a side note, Saw6 is also playing before Halloween, so if that's your kinda movie, then there ya go!

Drag Me to Hell (Sorry about the clevvertv intro before the preview) is out on Blueray and DVD, I was finally able to watch it and it was fun. A few jumpy parts, a few funny parts, and you can see Raimi's touch all over it! Get it while you can!

So not too much to report on this week, a few movies still in the pipes, a few million remakes still being made, and so few weeks left before Halloween.

Did you know there are Haunted Calgary tours? Stay Tuned!

Wednesday Already?! Update Time! + CONTEST INFO! + SPLATTERFEST!

Well this past week has been eventful! Aside from Facebook laying a smackdown on me for some reason. I think I may have broken some Facebook rule about posting multiple links, some users find it abusive in nature so it is not allowed. I am exploring other options to ensure I can continue to do Reviews, and Update your minds with wonderful junk without any barriers or restrictions. =) I opened a blog on Blogspot to service all our horror needs and will post all updates here whether or not updates make it through facebooks cold evil talons.

CONTEST!?? WTF OMG!! It's True!

I have finally decided on the contest I will toss on your eager laps and The prize shall rock most excellent. I want all you interested and interesting people to create for me your best Horror Photo! Here is an example!

2. Something scary better be going on! Either to you, or on you, or coming after you.
3. The Bloodier The Better!
4. The less computer effects and the more special make-up / costumes / homemade awesomeness used the better! You can still Photoshop, just remember that when it comes decision time, more points awarded for make-up over comp. generated.

It's a double feature and will also include some horror shorts, Trailers, and prizes! Don't say you forgot about it as i've mentioned it almost every week since they decided to do it. For those curious what's playing, we will be fortunate to watch THE BEYOND! followed by the Canadian Premiere of MELVIN. The Beyond rocks, Melvin...well, lets just say it might not rock as much...none the less, go!

Tis the season for Haunted Houses! Project X / Frightfest which usually sets up at COP seems to be quiet and dead this year. Not sure if that means they won't be there, the website says no. Nightmare Now at Kartworld is a go this year. If you hear of any others let me know!

So Remember Ghouls, lets see how creative you can be and show me your best horror pic! Make sure you get to SplatterFest Tomorrow at 7pm, come early to ensure a seat! And never check what that sound was in a dark house...ever.

Weekly Update! Oct.2nd/09

Brains Brains Brains . . . Zombies have been taking over lately, what seems like a sudden influx in the undead could possibly be attributed to the universe trying to balance out all the Vamp stuff running rampant these days. Wednesday night at the Plaza showcased the epic Nazi Zombie movie
Dead Snow ! I found out they will be replaying it through out October so we all have a chance to check that good one out later. Fear not! For if you couldn't catch your zombie fill from that you can catch it with the fantastic zombie-horror-comedy
ZOMBIELAND ! Out in theaters today! This looks extremely promising, anyone wanna try for a showing Sat. Sun? Let me know =) And finally if you just want a quiet weekend at home, free from all the death and the coming zombie apocalypse . . . TOO BAD! Space Channel will be assaulting your TV with a ZombieWeekend Marathon, Starting with FIDO, the story of a young boy and his loving pet, a 6ft zombie named Fido. Followed by Romero's Dawn of the dead, also Shawn of the Dead and more! All in all we are all screwed, you can't hide from the zombies . . . though you could probably outsmart them. Just make sure to buy a safety helmet for your noggin, and you might have a chance.

Remakes . . . Love 'em or Hate 'em, Hollywood will continue to pump them out. They try to veil the fact they are destroying classic movies by calling them Re-do's, Reboots, Re-imaginings, its Re-freakin'-diculous! Some movies are classics and should never be touched, others I have to admit could do with a new look and new feel. Besides, sometimes bringing an old franchise to a new generation is a good thing! None the less I present for your consideration a shortlist of upcoming Remakes. Laugh, cry, just don't shoot the messenger!

Army of Darkness / Evil Dead - Sam Raimi has wanted to redo them for awhile, it's been in the pipes but never materialized. Lets hope it stays that way.

Attack of the Killer Tomatoes - Awesome! I remember this as a kid, should be a great remake!

The Blob - Mr. Rob Zombie is on deck to do this remake of the remake of the original.

The Birds - Well I'll try not to fall asleep during ..ZZzzZzzz..

Child's Play - Everyones favorite murderous Doll is back to square one.

Children of the Corn - 2 different companies want to create 2 seperate remakes. I foresee both of them bombing.

GhostBusters! - Before you start frothing at the mouth, keep in mind the old cast is set to take their respective roles back!

Halloween 3D - ...Because why remake something once if you can do it again in 3D!

Hellraiser - One of my favorite horror franchises will be remade. Pinhead is awesome no matter what so I have high hopes for this.

Stephen Kings IT - This movie is so creepy still, even the passage of time has yet to diminish it's horrific tale. Not scared of Clowns? How about now?

Little Shop of Horrors - The campy original could definitely do with a remake.

Nightmare on Elm Street - The holy trinity of Halloween, and Friday the 13th wouldn't be complete if Nightmare didn't get a remake too. I'm cautiously awaiting this one.

Plan 9 from Outer Space - Ed Wood is turning in his grave!

Predator and Total Recall - Arnie will crush your girly arms if you embrace these remakes!

Piranha 3D / Puppetmaster 3D / Re-animator 3D / Saw 3D - I <3 3D.

Rocky Horror Picture Show - Some movies are sacred ground...some movies have legions of screaming fans who dress up, know all the words and songs, watch the movie religiously every Halloween and sometimes every week, and well...do you really want to make these Crazies angry? Good luck with that MTV, let me know if you survive. (P.S. This is playing at our Plaza on Oct. 30-31!)

Scream - Somewhere, Someone thought it was a good idea to do a full Reboot of this franchise....idiot.

Silent Night, Deadly Night - Could be good, if it can be as controversial as the original!

The Wolfman - The previews look kinda dope, it is a remake of the OLD school version from way back.

And that's about it. I posted what I found interesting, however if you want to see the full list check here! -> REMAKES

As our time draws to a close I have but one favor to ask. There is a movie coming to select cities. A movie called Paranormal Activity, which looks pretty damn sweet. Now there is a website you can go and DEMAND that it play in your select city. If Calgary, which is sitting at 5th place at the moment on the list of Canadian cities, can rally up enough demand then they will play it here. Here is the trailer so you can decide if you want to support it -> SPOOKY
And here is the website to Demand it! -> DEMAND IT!

See you all next week and remember, protect your noggin!
